Sample Appreciation Post: DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince – Brand New Funk.

1985 Style.

Sound: Golden Age Hip Hop and Sampling at its best.
Album: Hes the Rapper, I’m The DJ (1988)

Sample: Donald Byrd – “Fallin Like Dominos”

Why?
“Brand New Funk” should be automatic learning for people interested in Hip Hop and Jazz music, since Donald Byrd is a Jazz Legend… and I mean, I shouldnt have to tell you what DJ Jazzy and Will Smith mean to hip hop. At least what they mean to me.

Back when how fresh your gear was and synchronized dancing was more important than being a thug in Hip Hop (yeah, it actually happened), Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith brought you that crossover Pop Hip Hop that started taking the genre to that next level of exposure. Not to mention the First Hip Hop Grammy they won from it. Wonderful sample of a wonderful song that everyone should know about, basically.

Still a hot cut today. Thats when you know its quality. LoL.

And Jazz is still at it, making some of the dopest mixes and cuts you’ve heard. Most recently, taking tracks from the Great Michael Jackson, and chopping them up Jazz style for Our Enjoyment. You should most Definitely check this mixtape out.

Enjoy.

One of my favorite Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince, and I love how they kept the live recording raw, no need to clean it up. 1988… damn.

    • E

the live recording was one of the best things ever. 1998 was the greatest shit ever sometimes. lol.

That was throwback. It was one of the first song I heard that influence me to fall in love with hip hop. Jazz and Will need to come out of no where with a hot record together!
