Album: Cage The Elephant
Sound: People say indie and punk, I say there’s a clear blues and revival influence. But overall, AWESOME.
Why?
Because if you don’t, you don’t like music. No. Not really.
But I haven’t heard a band with a sound and a style like this in a long time. Well, maybe Blood Red Shoes, but this is different. Different and amazing. Some just are just calling it indie or punk, but I think there’s more going on with it. You can hear the definite blues influence throughout the album (No Rest for The Wicked? Come on now). Aggressive and fresh. Inspired and angry. Lyrically intriguing and musically exciting. There is a future for these guys in music if they want it. And can keep it up.
So whats so fun about this band? Well, just the range of music they are tackling (and well) on this album, and how they are doing it. Their ability to change a song and its whole sound within the same record… and the flawless musical transitions that really show their skill (and or excellent timing). The aggressive power punk chords with respect to this blues influence you hear.
So what songs should I be looking for,” you ask? Well you know I got you. You’ve got the punkish “James Brown,” The blues inspired “No Rest For The Wicked,” (which I’m sure you’ve seen in a few commercials at some point), the high energy, tempo changing “Free Love,” or the epically dope “Lotus,” with one of the best musical transitions towards the end of this song I’ve heard in a bit.
Or you could go with their official “F*ck You Haters and Critics” theme… “In One Ear.”
Check the lyrics tho.
They say that we ain’t got the style,
We ain’t got the class,
We ain’t got the tunes that’s goin to put us on the map
And I’m a phony in disguise,
Tryin to make the radio,
I’m an anti-social anarchist, I sound like so and so,
They say I’m just a stupid kid,
Another crazy radical,
Rock and roll is dead I probably should’ve stayed in school,
Another generation X who somehow slipped up through the cracks,
Oh they’d love to see me fall but I’m already on my back
And it goes In One Ear,
And right out the other,
People talkin’ shit but you know I never bother,
I goes In One Ear,
And right out the other,
People talkin’ shit,
They can kiss the back of my hand
Now I know I’m not a saint,
I been a sinner all my life,
I ain’t tryin to hide me flaws,
I’d rather keep them in the light,
They wanna criticize, scrutinize,
Cast another stone,
Burn me at the stake and sit and watch it from their throne,
They say the devil is my pal,
I do a lotta drugs!
The crowd will only like me if they’re really fuckin’ drunk,
They think they know my thoughts,
But they don’t know the least,
If they listened to the words they’d find the message tucked beneath
But it goes In One Ear,
And right out the other,
People talkin shit even though they never bother,
It goes In One Ear,
And right out the other,
People talkin’ shit, they can kiss the back of my hand
(You hear that… you hear what’s coming? Oh you better run for the hills, cos we’re coming to your town, and we’re gonna burn that mother fucker down!)
Here’s the moral to the story,
We don’t do it for the glory,
We don’t do it for the money,
We don’t do it for the fame
So all the critics who despise, go ahead and criticize,
It’s your tyranny that drives us, adds the fire to our flames
And it goes
In One Ear,
And right out the other,
People talkin’ shit but you know we’ll never bother,
It goes In One Ear,
And right out the other,
I’m only playing music cos you know I fuckin love it,
It goes In One Ear,
And right out the other,
People talkin’ shit but you know we’ll never bother,
It goes In One Ear, and right out the other,
People talkin shit well you know they can kiss the back of my hand.
</endawesome>
