Although I’m kind of late to the party, I’m still glad I showed up.
After a long vacation of beautiful travel, wonderful experiences, and a long time without my full album collection anywhere around me (no people, I do not own an iPod. Thats a whole other blog, okay?), I steal the s.o.’s iPod on the airplane ride home. As I scan through his collection, I realized it had been a while since I had played some Lupe Fiasco. Namely since that whole Twilight soundtrack thing. Since I had been previously introduced to “I’m Beaming” by the s.o., and acknowledged the amazing that the song actually is production, I admittedly pushed it to the back burner while I was obsessed with Kaki King’s “Junior” and Blood Red Shoes’ new album. I didn’t listen to what he was saying. A mistake that didn’t happen twice.
Being in a positive mindstate, I knew I wanted to hear something in the same vein… Or something lyrically challenging to give my brain something to do for the 5 hour flight. And something instinctively, “I’m Beamin” just seemed like the way to go. From the start of this song, the beautiful piano chords that open this song had me from the start. Soulful and slightly gospel inspired, the piano led into a powerful statement of affirmation and self-worth that placed itself perfectly inside the frame of mind I was in…
Today, nobody cares.
But tomorrow, they will. They will.
….with my full attention and curiosity within his reach, Lupe proceeds to go into a lyrically intensive and intriguing style that he’s basically known for at this point… One of those lyricists where you might have to hit the rewind button a few times and think about what he just said. Regardless, with the synthesizers starting, drums coming in, and my brain captivated, I listened in to one of the biggest lyrical wins I’ve heard in a minute.
They said my future was dark, see me now?
Just look around… I’m Beaming.
They used to talk, when I ran around…
You see me now… I’m Beaming.
I get my energy from my inner G
I be in outer space, but I got inner peace.
So tell my enemies that they can’t injure me.
I know that irritates, you have my sympathies.
Well, you should protest, yeah, you should picket me
I’m on a losing strike, I’m on a winning streak
I’m out in left field, I’m speaking mentally
But thats a better places than where the benches be.
I’m feelin’ really good, me and my different beat,
Me and my different drummer, he play the timpanis
See, that’s what got me here, you hearin’ me
Me on my black man in the future shit, call me Billy Dee.
See I’m just forward lookin, thats how I really see
See why you valentines, I’m thinkin christmas trees.
And thats howd it would be, even at Micky D’s
Semi-colon, close parentheses.
….Do you remember me, the guy from verse 1?
Failures my last name, nevers my first one
You see I hood a lot, and yea I nerd some
Hoods where the heart is, nerds where the words from.
Dont represent either, because I’ve merged them.
Its kids who wanna leave, and I encourage them.
Go out and see the world, never return from…
Yea you don’t come back, unless you learned somethin.
And baby girl what does it matter where your purse from
Your hurr done, your nails did, your ass fat but YOU’RE DUMB.
Mix Melyssa Ford, with Maya Angelou
Become a Top Model, and Sojourner (Truth, wiki it) too
I try to follow this, what Mohammed do
It’s such an old soul inside this Sonic Youth.
It’s why I’m ferrari’d up and I’m conscience too…
I don’t Prophesize, I Promise You.
….Yea its me again, the guy from verse 2
But its the last one, it’s almost curfew
It’s almost night out, so turn ya lights on
Where all my 760′s, with ya brights on?
Yea they are the ones, to keep your eyes on.
Like how we used to do, to keep the house warm…
Now those the type of eyes, I’m not cry from
You see the tears’ll fall, run out my cryin songs
Now the world shoulders, is what we cryin on
The worlds fast lane, is what I’m drivin on
What am I drivin at, tryin to drive at home…
I’m in the driver’s seat, but you can ride along.
Its never cyclops, its never I alone.
I’m tellin your story, wherever I perform.
Now if they lookin for me, tell me I’ve gone…
Out in the bright lights, right where I belong.
They said my future was dark, see me now.
Just look around…I’m Beaming. (Beaming!)
They used to talk, when I ran around…
You see me now…I’m Beaming.
Now if that was way over your head, #1. Dont read my blog anymore (lol) and number #2. Lupe (or whoever did his video, Illustrative Media) had the foresight to hit you with a optically stunning video that basically lays everything out for you for your eyes to see if your brain couldn’t keep up with what was being said. One of the first videos to pop up on MTVJams when I got home, sometimes it just feels like things just fall into place for you to see. With just the right touch of CGI and cute little kids running around having a genuinely good time, the video is the perfect complement to an amazing song.
Flawless song and video. All around win. And one of those songs that will be forever embedded in my brain as one of those songs that will bring back nothing but positive memories for a while. Thanks Lupe, for giving me something to relate to.
