Sample Appreciation Post: Erick Sermon | Music = Marvin Gaye | Turn On Some Music

Marvin = Epic

Sound: Well Produced, Well Sampled, Boom Bap Hip Hop.
Album: Music (2001)
Sampled From: Marvin Gaye “Turn On Some Music” | “Vocal Sample of  ‘I’ve Got My Music’”

Why?
It’s the hip hop music junkies anthem. He says it within the first verse of the song… “I wish Music could adopt me.” Yep. Just about explains it all.
On a detailed, amazing flip of a Marvin classic, Erick does what he does best… tells you the story of the life of the Music Nerd. Expressing his adoration for the art of hip hop, the elements and history, and the power music has to unite all people of all colors and creeds. Great hip hop music. At this point, this song is almost 10 years old, and still plays like its brand new. I was lucky to be at a listening party for this album years ago… and snag a Promo CD for the album where he goes into detail about the new album, and some of his past hits. The story behind “Music” and how it was made is almost as good as the song itself (click here for the download).

The Sample: Turn On Some Music

This, and the Original Vocal Instrumental of this song were what we’re used to make this awesome win of a song.
I mean, the lyrics within themself is enough reason to keep this song on repeat.
“‘Cos music’s been my therapy
Taking the pain from all my anatomy
Oh and my anatomy
It’s my symphony, always stay with me
You know that the world ain’t right
Baby, lots of people stay uptight
I’ll go crazy
If something ever happened to my musical thrill
And darling your love is just like my music.

Music is the soul of the man
Music makes a happy day
And music makes the clouds go by baby
Your music keeps my tears inside my eyes
Your music makes me want to sing
Girl, music is a joy to bring
Music is my heart and soul
More precious than gold

Happiness today is just a song away…”

Coming with that “I usta love H.E.R.” type of metaphorical writing, Marvin combines his love for the ladies with his obvious obsession with his art… Music. No one does it like this anymore. I wish more people would.

Enjoy, dammit.

Agreed. The Green Eyed Bandit showed everyone how to properly use a sample with this one.
