Teena Marie. I Adore You. (AKA: The Teena Marie Media Appreciation Post.)

Teena Marie. Known in LA to most of my Mom’s people as Mary Christine Brockert. Appeared in an episode of The Beverly Hillbillies at the age 7 as “Tina Marie Brockert.” Venice High School Alumni. All around multi-instrumental prodigy. Picked up and mastered several instruments (piano, guitar, bass) before the age of 21. The ORIGINAL protegé of Rick James. Founder of the “Teena Marie Law” (label cannot keep an artist under contract without putting out an album by him or her). I remember being 6 years old and finally figuring out Teena was white and awesome by going over my friend’s house, whose Mom had her vinyl collection. I stared at the cover of “Naked To The World” all day. One of my first inspirations to play music… especially since this woman produced, arranged and mastered the majority of her own music. The least I can do is play some piano. A regular at Los Angeles County High Schools, Teena would show up randomly for pep talks, appearances and performances. A woman who loved LA.
Her voice is legend. I didn’t get to see her live, and that really sucks.
I’m going to miss her so much.

When it hurts, I listen to music. And share with other people. You should too.
Heres some of my best stuff from my CD collection. You download what you need/don’t have. Excuse me while I roll around in her liner notes and cry for a while.

And if that isnt enough…
Teena Marie: Unsung.
Takes about an 30 minutes to download in full.

And if THAT isn’t enough,
Billboard did a great article on her life and accomplishments. Included a ton of videos. Read this.

Love you Ms. Marie.
Rest In Peace.
