J*Davey's getting their Pop Tunes on with "Outta the Window," and its Nice.

J*Davey

She had that hairstyle first, Cassie.

Sound: Soul meets Electronic Pop with a sprinkle of the Hipster.
Album: Boudoir Synema: The Great Mistapes

J*Davey makes an oh-so-necessary return to music with their new Video for “Outta the Window.” In it, we watch  Brook and Jack wonder through the desert and stumble across a ghost town with a Native American spirit that takes them on a psychedelic hipster trip, while creating a catchy, quite enjoyable little electro-pop tune for themselves.

Now when I need a great soul/funk influenced electropop track, I can almost always count on these two to somehow magically provide the sound that I’m searching for. You can download it here, and check out the video below:

Have Fun with it.

*Updated: Oh. So THIS is what Res has been up to.

Well there she goes.

So after randomly asking my music nerdy friends about Res, and where the hell she’s been lately… I got a surprising answer. Not only has she been at work with Talib Kweli and Idle Warship (I knew about that), but it also looks like she’s finally set some time aside to do some solo mixtape work. 8 years after dropping “How I Do,” Res makes a return with Black Girls Rock… an album that combines soul music with rock tendencies to make a beautiful mix of music. A great effort by Res, who has obviously been working on her lyrical game… and seems to be taking her time finding her niche. It’s hard when you have a voice and a style that is unique and interesting, but “unmarketable” by some standards. Why? I don’t know. Well, we DO know, but… you know. :\

You can check out the download for the mixtape here. Meanwhile, I’ll have a quick YouTube appreciation moment:

Album Appreciation: The Noisettes – Whats the time, Mr. Wolf?

with 3 comments

Circa 2006

Circa 2006.

Sound: AfroPunk… Updated Post Punk/Blues Rock with a British Edge.
Album: (#1) Whats The Time, Mr. Wolf?

Why?
While most people are probably most familiar with Noisettes most recent album, “Wild Young Hearts…” it was their first effort that had me at first listen. Forming in 2003,  they are a perfect combination of Rock mixed with Blues and energy. Great guitar work throughout. Stunning bass and vocal work by the tenacious Shingai Shoniwa, whose voice can go from a powerfully pitched high “riot grrrrrrl” squeal to a deep, breathy vibrato without effort. Guitarist Dan Smith and Drummer Jamie Morrison are amazing within themselves, creating melodies, guitar solos and rhythms that gave this first album such a powerful sound.

Key songs to listen to?  “Iwe,” “Scratch Your Name” and “Dont Give Up.”

While the second album explores more of a softer pop sound (which is great, by the way), I’m definitely a first album girl… I love the energy you feel from the music they were making around that time, and they have everything they need to continue their march into musical awesomeness.

Being a nerd, I found some old videos of them I took for intern work at an old label… Live at the LA Detour Festival in 2007. Might as well post it up.

Enjoy.
