Unexpected Win.

Always finding new and impressive ways to up and surprise me, Mayer Hawthorne comes through with his latest project, “Impressions: The Covers” EP. Filled with with wonderful covers of everyones old school favorites, like ‘(I got) Work To Do, ‘Fantasy Girl,’ and ‘You’ve got the Makings of a Lover,’ Mayer is basically establishing his talents and dominance in the awesome niche of Retro Soul, and music overall. And its free. So there’s really no losing involved in any of this right now. Unless you dont download it.

This boy is good, I’m a believer after this little joint. As If I wasnt before.

Anyways, you can download the EP in full by heading here. Break it open on Sunday morning, get your breakfast game on, sit down and listen to this, and enjoy.

Amy Winehouse’s new album is looking official. Like, “Completed” Official. Links

Taken in early January. She look good tho.

Now after anyone has a run like Amy has the last few years, naturally you’re going to be a bit wary and cautious when news pops up regarding new music, new tours… anything. Getting caught up in boyfriends, drugs and family drama will hold anyone up/make anyone flakey for a while. And after seeing Amy probably hit bottom and blatantly not giving a fu*k for a while… it’s a wonderful thing when things really seem like they are starting to turn for the better. And it honestly looks like they are.

In the last year, after looking like she had re-engaged herself to the asshole, she’s finally ditched the douchebag boyfriend Blake and moved on to someone new… and it looks like he’s doing her right. Don’t know if that’s long-term, but who cares. As long as she’s moving on with her life. In the meantime, it looks like she’s been taking care of the little things, as well as the important shit. On top of making sure her Visa and Passport are clear for travel in 2011 and starting a small tour in brazil, She’s supposedly rallied some of the best talent around her on the low to start building her new band and sound. Along with teaming up with Questlove and Raphael Saddiq for new music and to start some kind of super bands…. It also looks like she’s secured Cee-Lo Green in support of her new album as well. And even though she keeps claiming January as the target for her new album release… knowing how the industry is, we wont get it until spring at least. But at least it looks real. It looks very, VERY real.

Please Musical Jebus. Let this be real. Amen.

Cee-Lo just changed my entire life with his new single, “Fuck You.”

Greatness.

This will be a short blog, but it must be posted; simply based on the strength of its awesome.

After taking a brief break following his last supercreation with DJ/Producer Danger Mouse, Cee-Lo has completed his new album, titled “Lady Killer….” and he’s back to being fucking amazing; not only pushing the boundaries of  Hip Hop music (Goodie Mob; Outkast)… but he pushes the boundaries and your ideals of what Soul, Retro and Pop-Rock are too.

Currently the greatest song in the history of the world, “Fuck You” is a wonderful combination of the classic Pop-Infused, Retro Soul formula and updated, upfront, fairly harsh, keepin it 100% real witdatass lyrics dedicated to that gold digging bitch you shouldn’t have fallen in love with, and her basic, trickin’ ways. There is basically nothing I can say to describe the greatness that is this song. You just need to listen to it.

Since he’s currently at work at social networking and a Full Video, Cee-Lo has hit us with the temporary Lyric (teaser) Video, breaking down every “Fuck You” for you to see.

Enjoy this, and spread the word of this Wondrous Victory.

*Update (9.29.10)
If you loved this song, and you’re a total geek… Youre going to have to check out the Cee-Lo “Fuck You” 8-Bit Nintendo Remix. Seriously. Click this, and watch it NAO.

Thanks for stopping by.

Mayer Hawthorne is bringing Retro back. | “Wish it Would Rain” Appreciation.

Crate Digging is AWESOME.

Mayer Hawthorne, a 29-year-old kid out of Ann Arbor, Michigan is making some interesting, high quality retro music right now. And I’m fairly picky about my Retro… if it’s not done right, it ends up sounding contrite and cheesy. But not Mayer. Falling into that “Authentic” range that VV Brown and Dan Brown seem to be wedging themselves into, Mayer channels some of the musical greats like Barry White, Issac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield, and has crafted his own special brand of authentic retro soul that is catchy and undeniable. And with Mark Ronson behind him (the dude that’s responsible for Amy Winehouse’s Epic “Back to Black” album), you know there’s very little fail involved.

A perfect example of this is his new single “Wish It Would Rain” (click that) from his album “A Strange Arrangement.” With a stunning piano arrangement reminiscent of an old Dramatics song, and a melancholy tonality that reminds me of Simply Red’s “Holding Back The Years,” Mayer spills his emotions over a relationship coming to an end… and his desire to hide the overwhelming sadness flooding his heart. Not only is the song itself amazing, but the video compliments it perfectly, giving the viewer get a glimpse into the sadness Mayer is trying to work through. Its one of those videos that made me appreciate the song even more. A rare feat to come by these days.

Definitely worth looking into.

And Mayer or anyone in his camp…. If you read this… I got $20 on the Piano Sheet Music for this song. Seriously. Someone get on that for me. Until then, I’m forced to listen to the instrumental version over and over. Actually… Thats not a horrible concept. LoL.

Have fun.
