Since the Rapture is coming, I will prepare (celebrate?) with the appropriate musics.

Mary Mary is always appropriate.

Throw in some Kanye West for good measure:

….and Blondie by default. Shoutout to VH1Soul an’em.

Gotta get some Sam Cooke in…

And its not the Rapture without Anita Baker singing about being caught up in it.

This is the Chapter 8 | "I Just Wanna Be Your Girl" (Anita Baker's First Appearances) Appreciation Post.

with one comment

Man. You dont know how much I love this song.

When it plays, I’m overwhelmed by the vivid memories of waking up early sunday mornings… that soft yellow morning light breaking through the shades in my room, the sounds and smells of a focused Mom in the kitchen handling pancakes, turkey sausages cooking, the vinyl player already active and alive with Chapter 8 on the stereo speakers. Along with being a certified Soul Music Classic, theres a certain comforting feeling I associate with this song that expands far outside of its lyrical topic (which just happens to be beautiful, by the way).

Soul, Funk and Disco influenced, Chapter 8 was Anita’s first band and foray into the music industry back in 1979. Unfortunately, some moron at Ariola Records (which was their label at the time), dropped the band after one album, citing that the times and music had changed, and that Anita Baker could not sing (slap them). The label eventually folded. Funny though… Anita eventually rebounded with a new label and her first Solo Record, the legendary “Songstress.” I love how she won in the long run. With all the issues behind the Chapter 8 album, it made physical copies of the record, especially in vinyl (we got that though), very hard to find. Until I got incredibly lucky one day at amoeba. Thank you, Music Jebus.

If you’re interested in some classic soul | old school love music… or if you just need some good Sunday Morning Music (trust me), go ahead and listen to Chapter 8 | Anita Baker – I Just Want To Be Your Girl.

I didn't go anywhere. This is what had happened:

It'll be over/I'll be back soon.

*Reformatting the site with Chris Edwards is almost done. A bit longer than we’d all like, but it’s getting done.

*Kaki is on tour, caught the bufu bird which then caught AIDS, which then caught Cancer; broke her arm. AKA: Work.

*Been focusing on reading more and my writing for Potholes. I’ve got a review on Strong Arm Steady over there right now. That one is okay, but my thoughts on Lupe Fiasco’s Lasers are due this weekend. Those are better. You can head over there for more.

*My computer caught its first death virus the 1 week I let my AVG lapse. So I gotta handle that. Obviously.

*Helping LaToiya Williams plan out her Social Media platform for a possible new album. Thatll be fun.

*I just… needed to not write for a minute. Give my brain some time to think about how I wanna phrase things. And check my diction. If I had any. Sometimes you just don’t feel like writing, dammit.

*That doesn’t mean I haven’t been thinking, hearing and obsessing about my music though. My friends are touring with Katy Perry, Anita Baker is talking about new albums on twitter, new jobs keep popping up, and I’ve got tons of news and interviews to post and things to discuss.

I’ll be back at it soon guys. Just hold on for me.
I’m worth the wait.

-E
