Teena Marie. I Adore You. (AKA: The Teena Marie Media Appreciation Post.)

I Love You.

Teena Marie. Known in LA to most of my Mom’s people as Mary Christine Brockert. Appeared in an episode of The Beverly Hillbillies at the age 7 as “Tina Marie Brockert.” Venice High School Alumni. All around multi-instrumental prodigy. Picked up and mastered several instruments (piano, guitar, bass) before the age of 21. The ORIGINAL protegé of Rick James. Founder of the “Teena Marie Law” (label cannot keep an artist under contract without putting out an album by him or her). I remember being 6 years old and finally figuring out Teena was white and awesome by going over my friend’s house, whose Mom had her vinyl collection. I stared at the cover of “Naked To The World” all day. One of my first inspirations to play music… especially since this woman produced, arranged and mastered the majority of her own music. The least I can do is play some piano. A regular at Los Angeles County High Schools, Teena would show up randomly for pep talks, appearances and performances. A woman who loved LA.
Her voice is legend. I didn’t get to see her live, and that really sucks.
I’m going to miss her so much.

When it hurts, I listen to music. And share with other people. You should too.
Heres some of my best stuff from my CD collection. You download what you need/don’t have. Excuse me while I roll around in her liner notes and cry for a while.

And if that isnt enough…
Teena Marie: Unsung.
Takes about an 30 minutes to download in full.

And if THAT isn’t enough,
Billboard did a great article on her life and accomplishments. Included a ton of videos. Read this.

If you have any requests… let me know. I have almost everything.

Love you Ms. Marie.
Rest In Peace.

You Will Never Die.

New Video: Mystikal Freestyling + Mannie Fresh's Best Beats = Wow.

Welp, this is the first time that I’ve seen or heard Mystikal since he was released from prison a few months back on some interesting charges stemming from a woman laundering money from him a few years ago (do your research; it’s why you shouldn’t try to handle things “hood style,” then get the police involved). I’m still not too sure about how I feel about that whole situation… but I will give into the fact that he is a talented MC with a flow that cannot be copied. Most people were eager to hear from him again, but I was doubtful that he would even be interested in music again. Well, I was wrong. Above you is brand new footage just filmed and posted (thanks, @NefTheDamaja) of Mystikal chilling in Mannie’s new Porsche whateverthehellversionitis, getting a feel for some of Mannie’s best instrumentals and then beastin over the beats.

I’m intrigued.
Lets see what kinda comeback this leads to.

Enjoy.

Happy Birthday, Dick Dale.

Just don't be like John Mayer. :(

I had to sneak this in before the day was out.

Before Kaki was Kaki, and supposedly a trainer/teacher of Jimi, Dick Dale held my electric guitar nerdery in his gifted hands. The King of “The Surf Guitar” sound, Dale is the pioneer of reverb, and some say the start of the shoegaze era, before shoegazing even had a name. In other words, fairly cool.

As a matter of fact, this is one of those situations where you know his music, but you just didn’t know it was him making  it. Songs like The Victor, Night Rider, Hava Nagila (shoutout to my Jewish Peoples), and the legendary Miserlou.

Basically, a whole entire distinctive rock sound can be attributed to this man.
Happy birthday to you. Hope I get to see you live soon.

Enjoy.

Sample Appreciation Post: Pharcyde – Runnin.

with 7 comments

Legendary.

Sound: Classic 1995 Westcoast Sample Sound.
Album: Labcabincalifornia (1995)

Sampled From:
Stan Getz –  Saudade Vem Correndo

Why?
Pharcyde, in my really not important opinion, is one of the greatest Hip Hop Groups to ever grace the mic, honestly. The Westcoasts answer to the Easts De La’s and Tribes Called Quest, Pharcyde mastered the jazz sample flip early in the game. While 1992’s “Passing Me By” ended up being their biggest hit (which only reached, like… 56 on just the hip hop chart, dammit)… it was 1995’s “Runnin'” when I clearly remember being introduced to the wonder that is J. Dilla for the first time… and thinking to myself, “I hope this last for a long time.” lol.

The Sample:
Stan Getz is legend in the wide world of jazz. Namely, for his wonderful takes on Bossa Nova, a form of brazilian jazz that you need in your life. Dilla took key musical transitional phrases from Getz’s “Saudade Vem Correndo” and flipped it into the amazing work that most of us are familiar with.

Bossa Nova and Hip Hop? Done Dilla Style?
You cannot lose. You cant.

You cant lose with the instrumental for “Runnin” either.
Or the Instrumental for “Passin Me By.”
Or the Instrumental for “Drop.”
Please. Enjoy it all.
